Kansas City Restaurant Week: What is it and why you should care?
You have probably heard of Kansas City Restaurant Week, but what exactly is it? Simply put, it is a great way to try really good food at an exceptional price. But beyond that simple description, Kansas City Restaurant Week does so much for our community.
It is no secret that restaurant sales tend to trend downward during the cold, winter months. Last yearโs extremely harsh winter had a negative impact on several local restaurants. As I look over my timeline of photos on Instagram (@KansasCityFoodieFinds) I realize that some great meals I have had over the years came from restaurants that are no longer with us. Local restaurants do not have the financial backing of a large corporation and rely on you and me to support their establishment. Kansas City Restaurant Week gives many restaurants a boost of customers (and cash flow) during a much needed time. People around my office start talking about where they are going, where they have made their reservations and who has the best deal. I love hearing this dialogue! Usually, I am the only one raving and ranting about a particular restaurant, but during Kansas City Restaurant Week and the weeks leading up to it, everyone is a foodie. It does not matter if you are refined food critic or your average foodie who just likes to try something new, KC Restaurant Week has a little something for everyone.
Kansas City Restaurant Week is extremely important not only to local restaurants but the community itself. According to KCrestaurantweek.com, โParticipating restaurants pledge to donate 10 percent of sales from each meal to benefit an annual charity partner and two founding beneficiaries.โ The Don Bosco Center is the community beneficiary for 2020. โThis organization has empowered individuals and families to achieve self-sufficiency and independence through a comprehensive network of services tailored to the needs of Kansas Cityโs ethnically rich and culturally diverse community.โ
2020 Kansas City Restaurant Week runs from January 10th through the 19th. There are more than 200 restaurants that are a part of Kansas City Restaurant Week this year. I highly recommend visiting www.kcrestaurantweek.com to view the list of participating restaurants. From the website, you can navigate the list of restaurants by menu type, geographical location in the metro, cuisine or specialty diets. There really is something for everyone.
The first time I attended Restaurant Week, I was a little overwhelmed and confused on how it worked. Reservations are not necessary but are highly encouraged. The more popular restaurants will fill up fast (Pro Tip: If you do not get a reservation for a particular restaurant, see if they will accommodate you at the bar. I used this method at The Jacobson and had a wonderful dining experience). The meals are set menu and set prices. You will get to select from a multicourse lunch menu or dinner menu with set prices of $15 or $35 ($15 menu is typically reserved for lunch).
Overall, Kansas City Restaurant Week has always been a great experience for me. Of course, Iโm a foodie in Kansas City and this is essentially our Super Bowl, but I highly encourage you to participate this year. You will get to eat some spectacular food at reasonable prices while helping out your local restaurants and The Don Bosco Centers. If you have any questions regarding Kansas City Restaurant Week, make sure to visit the website or shoot me a message and I will be happy to assist.
So, where are you dining during Kansas City Restaurant Week?
Cheers,
Benjamin Fuentes
